CURFC record a fifth consecutive victory in the Varsity Match

Barnes. Saturday, February 21st 2015.

The CURFC VIII achieved a record victory by 300-23 over Oxford in the 85th Varsity Match at St. Paul’s School. It was clearly the intention of the side to use its greater experience – there were 6 members of last year’s winning VIII playing – and its two freshmen, both former national schools champions, to good advantage in order to match or even better Oxford’s score of 300-38 in 2010. Having built up a lead of 60-4 in the Singles the VIII maintained the pressure to the end, chalking up an overwhelming fifth consecutive victory in this fixture.

The Sparrows also had the experience of one player from last year’s Blues side in their first pair and were similarly able to build up a significant lead in the Singles and increase it in the Doubles, thus successfully defending the ‘Fist of Iron’.

Earlier, in the first ever ladies fixture, the inexperienced Cambridge pair were outgunned by 60-2 by the more powerful Oxford players. It is to be hoped that this contest will grow to be an annual event with a IV from each university.
