Ed Kay reaches first National Doubles final

April 2015, Alleyn’s School.

Ed Kay became the first Cambridge player to reach the final of the Cyriax Cup for National Doubles while still at university since Andrew Cowie in 1970.

Ed and his partner, fellow Old Pauline Tom Dean, beat 8-times winners Buchanan & Perry in the semi-final of the competition, played at Alleyn’s, then met first-time pairing of Will Ellison and Dan Tristao in the final. It was Will’s 6th appearance in the final, having been runner-up three times with Marcus Bate and then won it for the past two years with our own Charlie Brooks. Will was playing this year with former champion Dan Tristao (he won in 2012 with Dan Grant) because of Charlie’s recent knee surgery.

In the final Ed & Tom twice built early leads but in both games were pegged back by Will & Dean to 9-all and 8-all respectively. The final score was 15-11, 15-10 to Will & Dan.

Let’s hope this is the first of many appearances by Ed in a National Doubles final.
