Clean sweep for Cambridge at Universities Championships
British Universities Rugby Fives Championships, Cambridge University, November 27-29, 2015
A squad from the Cambridge University Rugby Fives Club, consisting of captain James Pinder, Hon.Sec. Ben Beltrami, former captain Ed Kay, along with Matt Shaw, Cameron Jenkins, Laurence Cook and Oli Quarry, achieved a clean sweep at the recent Universities championships.
In the Singles Kay, Beltrami and Shaw reached the semi-finals, from where Kay and Beltrami emerged to contest the final. After building up an initial lead in the first game Beltrami came under sustained pressure from Kay who eventually emerged victorious by 15-12, 15-3. This was a sweet victory for Ed Kay, the reigning National U25 Singles champion, as he had twice previously lost in the final of this competition.
In the doubles Kay & Quarry had hopes of making the final in their first outing as a pair but they were denied in the semi-final by the Bristol University first pair, Arnold & Parker. In the other half of the draw the defending champions from Cambridge, Beltrami & Shaw, made unchallenged progress to the final, where they defeated Arnold & Parker 15-8, 15-2.
