Silver weekend for Cambridge Men and Women

The weekend of January 16-17 was a busy and successful one for Cambridge Fives.

On the Saturday Ed Kay and Ben Beltrami competed in the Singles at the North West Open, played on the glass-back courts at the Manchester Y Club. Ben reached the semi-final, where he gave the National Singles champion a really close game, losing 11-8, 11-7. In the other court Ed Kay, currently ranked 4 in the country, achieved his first victory over a Top Three player, Dan Grant, by 11-5, 12-10. In the final Ed yet again found Will Ellison too hot to handle, though, losing 11-4, 11-2.

On the Sunday Ed paired up with fellow Old Pauline Julian Aquilina, but Ben Beltrami and his new partner Hamish Buchanan were just a shade too effective for them in the semi-final. Again, though, it was silver for Cambridge, as Ben & Hamish gave way to Will Ellison & Dan Grant 11-8, 11-8 in the final.

Meanwhile, at St. Paul’s in London, Sasha Hajnal-Corob and Cassi Henderson got useful experience and practice ahead of the 2nd Women’s Varsity Match in February by playing in the National Ladies Championships. They reached the final of the Doubles Plate, where they lost to a slightly more experienced pair of teachers from the staff of Rugby School. Once more, then, a (non-existent) silver medal!
