Cambridge players contest qualification for the National Singles finals

Cambridge, Saturday 11th November 2017

A qualifying round for the National Singles was held on the Cambridge courts on Saturday 11th November.

Captain Matt Shaw reports: Saturday saw the National Singles Qualifier for the Eastern region. This year the draw consisted solely of students from Cambridge University, with two groups of five battling it out for a place in the finals which are to be held in Manchester on December 2nd and 3rd.

Matches in the pools went according to seedings, with Shaw and Boyd making the final with relative comfort. The crunch matches occurred in the mid order of the groups, however, with Tim Bennett triumphing over Alan McPherson 15-11 (in what was also a ladder match) and Ashwin Ahuja beating Ben Yass 15-13 in a closely contested affair.

Initially the final was a grind, with Andrew Boyd relishing the back and forth at 4-4. Shaw then managed to crack him with the help of a “tactical shoelace” and win 15-7, 15-3. Matt thereby qualified for the finals.

Meanwhile, Jeremy took down Laurence in the 3rd/4th playoff 15-5, 15-2.

Thanks to all those who entered and made qualifying a competitive and successful event.
