Cambridge Men lose Varsity Match but Ladies win
St. Paul’s School, Saturday 17th February 2018
Cambridge’s 7-year run of victories came to an end in a closely fought Varsity Match, and the Sparrows also had to give way to the Beavers in the contest for the Fist of Iron. However, the Ladies won their match for the third year running.
In the Men’s Varsity Match the VIII found themselves well down after the 8 Singles matches, with just Ed Kay and Matt Shaw winning at nos 1 and 2. Both rounds of Doubles were evenly fought but the Oxford side had a little too much experience to give up the lead they had built.
In the Sparrows/Beavers contest it was a similar story, with the Oxford players displaying a little more consistency in both Singles and Doubles.
For the third year running the Cambridge ladies were too strong for an inexperienced Dark Blue IV, but the contest is becoming slowly more even. The top Singles match was undoubtedly the best game of the whole day, with Cassi Henderson defeating the Oxford Nr 1, runner-up in the National Schoolgirls’ Championship last year, by 16-15.
