CU Fives: Squad of 7 get good experience at the Universities Championships

Marlborough College, Wiltshire
Sat/Sun 16-17 November 2019

As part of the rebuilding process Club Captain Ashwin Ahuja and Ladies Captain Holly Nugent took 4 players new to the game to take part in the British Universities Championships. India Blaksley, Will Edmonds, Josh Loyd and Ewan Salter have all taken up the game this term, and it was Emrys Thursfield’s first experience of this high quality competition. Though only Holly came away with ‘silverware’ — an RFA Mug for second place in the Women’s Plate — familiarity with the kind of standard to which they must aspire is vital as the Club works to recover from the loss of players such as Ed Kay, Matt Shaw, Andrew Boyd and Ben Beltrami. Andrew and Ben were in fact competing, but for Edinburgh and London BPP respectively. Not surprisingly Ben won the Singles title at his fourth attempt and was runner-up in the Doubles, which he had already won three times with Matt Shaw.
