CURFC go on a trophy-spree!
Bob Dolby reports: Over a period of three weeks players from CURFC, past and present, went on a spree of trophy-winning.
It began at the British Universities Championships with Andrew Boyd, who played in the Varsity Match in 2017 and 2019, winning the Singles title. He was also runner-up in the Doubles. At the same tournament the current Women’s Captain, Holly Nugent, paired with Ben Yass to reach the final of the Open Doubles Plate.
Buoyed by their success in the Universities Championships Holly Nugent and last year’s Women’s Captain, Savanna Leboff, teamed up last weekend for the National Ladies’ U23 Championships and won the Doubles title. At the same event Holly won the Singles Plate.
The previous weekend Emrys Thursfield, the current Men’s Captain, had won the third place play-off in the RFA Challenger tournament, played at Cambridge.
With our players in such good form it was no surprise to see Emrys, Ben, Holly and last year’s Men’s Captain, Sarthak Garella, have a hand in winning each of the trophies at the end-of-year RFA President’s Cup competition at Oundle School. Emrys won the prestigious President’s Cup itself, Ben the Mate’s Plate, Holly the Love Mug and Sarthak the T-Pot. Players familiar with this event will know what a gruelling and high-standard day’s play is involved — the names on the trophies are a Who’s Who of modern day Fives.
It all augurs well for the Varsity Match in February.
