Successes for Cambridge Fives players Past and Present

A super double for Cambridge Fives these past few weeks, with the University Fives captain Marcus Cloke Browne (Winchester & Downing) winning the British Universities Singles Championship, and this weekend Ben Beltrami, captain 2016-17, winning the National Singles Championship for the first time, having been runner-up last season.

Ben is the first Cambridge National Champion since Dave Hebden beat Wayne Enstone in 1979.

In this year’s event, organised by former captain Charlie Brooks, Ben beat Ed Kay (captain of CURFC 2012-13), who was playing in his third final, making it an all-Cambridge contest.

Ben and Ed have already had successes this season in regional tournaments, winning 4 titles between them at the South West and West of England Championships.

In the Universities Championship Marcus, who was the 14th Cambridge player to win the Singles, played in the Doubles with former captain Emrys Thursfield (Merchant Taylors’ & Fitzwilliam) where they were runners-up to the defending champions from Durham University.

Emrys had earlier this season won the South East Singles Challenger Championship.

So plenty of light blue success to cheer about!
